FRISSELL Vintage TAMPA FLORIDA Pottery ART DECO Horse Bookends / ROYAL HICKMAN
Fresh from a local Tampa Bay estate.
Paper label reads: FRISEL'S (sp) CERAMIC SHOP, 2711 Cleveland St., Tampa, Florida.
I could very very little information on the maker of these bookends. Online research, shows "FRISSELL'S CERAMIC STUDIO" located 2711 Cleveland Street in Tampa, in the 1950's, up until 1960.
The crystalline glaze is similar to the Petty Crystal Glaze used by Royal Hickman, as is the design. I find it quite a coincidence that these were made in Tampa, where Hickman operated his own pottery in the late 1940's, after leaving Haeger Potteries, (before he moved to California to for Vernon Potteries, and then returned to work for Haeger.)
Did Hickman work with the Frissells before establishing his own pottery in Tampa? Did he teach the Frissells his glazes? Did the Frissells work with him, and start their own pottery after he left for California. Very interesting possibilities, and certainly worthy of further research.
Each measures approximately 6 3/4" tall.
This pair displays beautifully, and is in near-mint condition. (There is a very small and tight hairline to the hind quarters of one horse, as shown in bottom photo.) No other chips, nicks, cracks, hairlines, stains, or repairs. Usual crazing, as expected.
