    Description

An awesome example of the Meramac Pottery Co out of Newburyport, MA; named after the Merrimack River nearby.
The company was established in 1897 by Thomas Nickerson and primarily produced floral and vases vases. Starting in 1902 Mr. Nickerson started to use the impressed mark of the name Merrimac over an image of the sturgeon fish, prevalent in the local river. From this time forward the company became renowned for their exquisite glazes, often rivaling other local New England potteries such as Grueby and Walley. Unfortunately the pottery met its demise in 1908 when it burned to the ground never to be rebuilt.  Because of its short history, amazing glazes and true arts and crafts shapes, Merrimac Pottery has become highly sought after and collected. This pitcher is no exception, a sultry matte blue glaze covers the piece with areas exhibiting a lava appearance from firing. These attributes are rivaled only by its sleek, simple form. The ewer stands a full 9 1/2” tall with the top 5 1/4” from spout to back of handle. The base measures 3” diameter. Pictures clearly show the impressed mark of the company logo as well as the kiln stilt marks. I can fine no damage or repairs under magnification and it has been cleaned. Areas of pop bubbles forming the “lava effect“ are noted on the body as well as several spots with a glaze thinned during firing.  And absolutely fabulous arts and crafts example for sale. I have posted numerous pictures of different angles, please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description. Item will be well packed and insured for shipment.
All reasonable offers will be considered.
Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future.
    Thank you.
