The Akro Agate Company of Akron, Ohio was established in 1911 to make marbles and games; in 1914, the company moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia for economic reasons. In the middle of the 1930's, the company began experimenting with other pieces, including solid color ash trays, vases and decorative pieces, and in 1935, children's dishes. They began producing marbleized pieces in 1942. After the war, due to competition, imports, and the development of plastics, the company's market began to decline and in 1951, the Akro Agate company was sold to Clarksburg Glass Company.
